ASK A SLAVE Ep 1: Meet Lizzie Mae (by Ask A Slave: The Web Series)

My friend, Azie, was hired to portray a slave at a popular historic site (you can totally guess which one).  Part of her job was to interact with visitors and answer their questions.  She would come back with all sorts of crazy stories that always left me breathless with laughter.  I couldn’t believe some of the stupid shit people would ask.

When Azie told me she was thinking of turning her experiences into a web series, I knew it was going to be absolutely brilliant.  Ask A Slave is finally ready for the world to see.  If you’re into smart comedy with a helping of social commentary, please give it a watch and share with all of your friends.

When I was really little (maybe 7 or 8) I noticed that none of my parents’ siblings had children. It’s not like I didn’t know about sex. IDK why but for some reason my tiny child brain didn’t realize that sex didn’t always result in children. I thought that some women were genetically pre-selected to become pregnant at a certain time in their lives and there was nothing that could be done to prevent it. I thought some women, like my aunts, were ‘lucky’ enough to avoid pregnancy. This scared me so much I think I cried. <<;; I remember hoping so bad I lacked the gene and would never wind up pregnant.

Yep, even before I fully understood sex and childbirth I knew I never wanted children.

"1. Do not hate them for it. They are on a journey too.
2. Understand that sometimes you will be a bandage caressing a temporary wound or you will be a pinnacle of permanency rooted deeply in their heart. Accept that you do this to people too.
3. Do not step on your feet trying to find a rhythm you are not meant to follow.
4. Do not let it harden you: continue to nurture, continue to love.
5. People use words as anchors to latch onto bits of you and when they leave remind yourself that the sea never bled itself dry because a ship left it.
6. Write the nastiest letter and burn it.
7. Yes, they may have illuminated pieces of you that you were unaware existed. But now you do and they are not the last person to remind you.
8. Dizzy yourself with everything you love, like dancing in the greenhouse to horrid pop songs or reading Haruki Murakami.
9. Set all that anger ablaze, you are wasting your time sifting through it.
10. Internalize the fact that you were still breathing before you met them.
11. Forgive them."
